During the period of Mahalay Paksha (fortnight of the departed ancestors), 18 types of ancestors descend to the Earth. By performing Shraddha in this period (from Bhadrapad Krishna Paksha Pratipada to Bhadrapad Amavasya), the departed ancestors remain satisfied for a whole year.
