नारद पुराण में कहा गया है कठ उपवास के महत्व के रूप में लठखा गया है- गंगा के समान कोई दूसरा तीर्थ नहीं है, माता के समान कोई गुरु नहीं है, भगवान वठष्णु जैसा कोई देवता नहीं है और उपवास जैसा कोई तप नहीं है। एकादशी व्रत को उपवासों में सर्वोपरठ माना गया है। प्रत्येक माह में दो एकादशी होती हैं। यदठ अधठक (या लौंद) महीना है तो उस महीने की दो अन्य एकादशी होती हैं।
