MWCR Collies description

Minnesota Wisconsin Collie Rescue (MWCR) is a registered non-profit charitable organization made up of volunteers who are dedicated to the safety and welfare of purebred rough and smooth Collies. Click here to see the different types of Collie Coats and Colors.

The purpose of MWCR is to rescue as many unwanted Collies as we possibly can. We assess their adoptability and place them into loving homes. We try to make the best possible match between dog and new family.

Due to our limited number of foster homes, only purebred rough and smooth Collies will be accepted into MWCR.

How The Process Works:

In order to adopt a Collie from MWCR you must complete a MWCR Adoption Questionnaire. Once the references are contacted and the home check visit is completed, your application will be submitted to the Adoption Committee and Board of Directors for their approval. Once your application is approved, we notify you if we find a Collie that will suit your criteria, family, home and lifestyle. We try to learn as much as we can about a family to help us make a forever match between you and your new Collie.

Animal shelters, humane societies, animal control, and private citizens in Minnesota and Wisconsin use our services. When a member of our group is contacted about a Collie that needs a home we make arrangements to acquire the Collie. We pay any adoption and medical fees required.

If all medical work has not been completed, we take the Collie to a veterinarian for any necessary treatment. The Collie must have current vaccinations for rabies and communicable diseases prior to foster care placement. All MWCR Collies will be neutered or spayed prior to adoption.

Next, each rescue Collie is bathed and groomed if needed and placed in a foster home to receive care until we find a match with an adoptive home. The foster caregivers treat each dog as a family member. The Collie is assessed for temperament and personality as well as compatibility with other pets and children when possible. Then, a photograph and brief biography is placed on our web site so that prospective adopters know which Collies are available for adoption.

When interested adopters contact us, they must complete a MWCR Adoption Questionnaire. The adopter must have an appropriate fenced or exercise area, know something about the responsibilities of dog ownership, allow the Collie to have indoor privileges and agree to reference checks and a home check visit. This process can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month or two - we are all volunteers. When a suitable match is made, the adoption is completed with the signing of a formal Adoption Contract.

If you are interested in adopting a Collie, we encourage you to complete an application - even if there is not a Collie on the website that suits your family. That way, as Collies come into our program, we can be thinking about your family even before they are up on our website! Maybe your family would like to foster a Collie in need with the possibility of adopting that Collie if things work out. Click here for information on fostering a Collie for MWCR.
