Bíblia (do grego βίβλια, plural de βίβλιΠν, transl. bíblion, "rolo" ou "livro")1 2 é o texto religioso de valor sagrado para o Cristianismo3 4 5 , em que a interpretação religiosa do motivo da existência do homem na Terra sob a perspectiva judaica é narrada por humanos. É considerada pelos cristãos como divinamente inspirada2 , sendo que se trata de um documento doutrinário. Foi a Igreja Católica quem copilou a Bíblia, definindo quais seriam os livros inspirados, que por sua vez entraram no Cânon Bíblico. Posteriormente, os demais grupos cristãos que surgiram também adotaram a Bíblia como Livro Sagrado.Segundo a tradição, aceita pela maioria dos cristãos, a Bíblia foi escrita por 40 autores, entre 1500 e 450 a.C. (livros do Antigo Testamento) e entre 45 e 90 d.C. (livros do Novo Testamento), totalizando um período de quase 1600 anos.6 A maioria dos historiadores acredita que a data dos primeiros escritos considerados sagrados é bem mais recente: por exemplo, enquanto a tradição cristã coloca Moisés como o autor dos primeiros cinco livros da Bíblia (Pentateuco), muitos estudiosos aceitam que foram compilados pela primeira vez apenas após o exílio babilônico, a partir de outros textos datados entre o décimo e o quarto século antes de Cristo.7 Muitos estudiosos também afirmam que ela foi escrita por dezenas de pessoas oriundas de diferentes regiões e nações.8
Segundo uma interpretação literal do Gênesis (primeiro livro da Bíblia), o homem foi criado por Deus a partir do pó,9 após os céus e a terra,10 entre seis e oito mil anos atrás, 11 e ganhou a vida após Deus soprar o fôlego da vida em suas narinas.10 12
É o livro mais vendido de todos os tempos13 com mais de 6 bilhões de cópias em todo o mundo, uma quantidade 7 vezes maior que o número de cópias do 2º colocado da Lista dos 21 Livros Mais Vendidos, O Livro Vermelho.14
Nos Estados Unidos, o único presidente que não fez o juramento de posse com a mão em uma Bíblia foi Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909), de acordo com os registros oficiais do Architect of the Capitol.15 John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), em sua posse, de acordo com cartas escritas pelo mesmo, colocou a mão em um volume de direito constitucional ao invés da Bíblia para indicar a quem pertencia sua lealdade.15 Não há registros para presidentes anteriores a John Tyler (1841-1845).
