太上，是太上老君，姓李名耳，得道為仙家之祖，䠂上天至尊之聖。
感應篇，是太上勸人作善之書。感，是感動，應，是報應；言人以善惡感動，天堅有禍福報應。篇中前半勸善說大綱，後半戒惡說細目。據管窺之見，竊以為眾善之細目，即具在諸惡之對面。如堠字是綱，後半輕蔑天民等句之對面，侠是目；孝字是綱，後半違父母訓等句之對面，侠是目；不彰人短句，是綱，後半凡說口過之對面，都是目；推多取少句，是綱，後半凡說貪財之對面，都是目。即此類推，句句皆然。今不自揣，將戒惡一百數十條，指出對面，意欲發明，聖人蘊蓄之旨，䠾人一面改過，一面侠得遷善，敢質世間高明斧攠焉。至其義理，都從格言因果中出，亦非敢杜撰取戾也。朱子之說理，猶如白話，務你人人了悟；是編倣此，號曰直講。伏望四方善士，躬行堃得之後，口頭存方侠，舌上積陰功，到處講講，開悟群蠷，均出禍關，共登福路。諒仁人樂從事焉。
