As an avid YouTube viewer (and YouTube Red subscriber) I have a YouTube app installed on almost every device I own. I am truly shocked that the worst of them all is the YouTube for Android TV app. Compared to the app on my phones, tablets, Roku, Xbox one and browser the Android TV app lacks many features those others have had for a while now. For instance: 1) Auto-Play. What's a simple toggle switch on every other app is simply unavailable on Android TV. 2) UI. There is no auto-hide or hide option for the UI on a paused video. Need to pause to see or read something on screen? Or read some text on the video intro? Sorry, you can only imagine what it looks like behind the huge Red Title bar, transport buttons etc. (For comparison: every other Youtube app has a auto-hiding UI on paused videos, ROKU takes a step further by simply pressing up on remote). 3) Casting. ??? This one truly shocked me. Here's a feature they took away ONLY on Android TV. Huh? *shrug* I enjoy Youtube so much I signed up for it's paid service, now because of this app, which by it's very purpose makes no sense for it to be gimped on its parent company's TV OS, is starting to make less sense.

At least add basic features from regular app like turning off auto play. Rather see a straight port of mobile app with remote functions added.
Louis Solomon review Louis Solomon
how do I disable the auto play? I just want to walk through my subscriptions in chronological order. not some random play list of what you think is cool

Watch Later needs to be sorted by descending date.

This is terrible compared to the normal Android version. It never remembers my playback position even if I leave the video for one second, always have to restart. Not to mention it's very slow to navigate and those ads... WHY is there not an option for me to pay to remove these ads?? Some of them are not even appropriate.

After Oct 2nd 2015 update it is still missing: 1.- Subscribe/Unsubscribe to channels 2.- Add/Remove a video to a list or watch later 3.- 60fps support 4.- View date added on video thumbnails (this was fine before, it was removed at some point which is really frustrating). Still I will update to 2 stars because there were a few things fixed, a few steps more to have the complete Youtube experience.

Google cast was a most important feature for me. Now pairing With my tablet no longer works. Why this step back? This must be fixed in near futur.

Not as good as the PS3 Youtube app. When you're playing your subscriptions, you have to hit "back' at the end of every video and manually play the next video. It should treat subscriptions like a playlist! Also, it doesn't have app connect support, assuming you'll use the Chromecast Youtube stuff instead. However, it's still YouTube, which has replaced almost all of my other TV watching. At least my daily watching habits.

Every time I try to do a voice search from the remote, it keeps waiting as if it's waiting for me to say more, then the text in the search bar goes blank as if it didn't just hear me clear as day.

Constantly buffers despite good connection. Starts the clip from the beginning if i have paused it and screensaver on Nexus Player kicks in, so annoying. The YouTube app on my smart tv from LG is superior to the the Google app YouTube, running on Android TV from Google, on a Nexus Player from Google. It really should not be that way. Please fix this app, worst YouTube client ever.....

Youtube for Android TV has some videos running with ghosting. Please solve this, Youtube!

Sound doesn't work on Sony Android TV's if you disable the TV's speakers. So if you have your audio being pushed out via the optical port to your stereo and have your TV speakers disabled, youtube won't play any audio. Only seems to effect this app. Netflix etc don't suffer the same issue.
Ian Stephenson review Ian Stephenson
No 60FPS support, doesn't show all subscriptions, no way to add videos to playlist, and YouTube Live support is very broken. Why is this app so bad?

Works very poorly on my Sharp Aquos LC-70UE30U. If a video comes on after the video you just watched - it's all black with full audio. To watch another video you have to back out and select it on your own, no continuous watching is possible. It may be that YouTube doesn't work well with 4K or large screens via the Android platform, at it's current version. It could even be that the TV attempts to upscale 1080p to 4K and YouTube is confused. Either way, it needs to be fixed. All content is un-watchable after a single video.

Love this app, but there are a couple of essential features missing that make it painful to use: (1) No way to filter search results. This means when searching, many of the results are often years old. Particularly annoying when searching for current videos. (2) Can't view comments on a video. A key feature of YouTube is being able to read the community discussion on the video. This feature is desperately needed. (3) Can't minimize a currently playing video to search for others. In order to search for videos you have to entirely exit the currently playing video. When you are used to iOS app (which allows you to minimize the currently playing vid) this feels very clunky.
