Much of the attractiveness of Washington can be attributed to the hundreds of outdoor sculptures and monuments that adorn the parks, gardens, buildings, avenues, and cemeteries of the city. L’Enfant suggested the use of outdoor sculpture as a way to honour the new country’s heroes. The first outdoor sculpture situated in Washington was the Tripoli Memorial, commemorating the heroes of the Tripolitan War.

It’s easy to ride the Metro or hop on a bike and explore all that DC has to offer. Walk the halls of free Smithsonian museums, paddle on the Potomac River or sit back on a double-decker tour bus and soak up some history. Local shops, funky marketplaces and people-watching hot spots beckon by midday, as nighttime gives way to multi-course dinners and drinks from local breweries. However you spend your time here, make it count.
Washington DC’s subway system can be a great way to get around. The system is known as the Washington Metro, or “Metro” for short. The six line, 91 station system interconnects the city and nearby suburbs in Maryland and Virginia. It can be a great way to avoid the notorious DC traffic and go straight to the National Mall, the Smithsonian Museums, the White House, sporting events, and much more.
