Vibrate It - Expedition description

This app has been created for construction industry professionals who want to assess the dynamic performance of their structures in a quick, easy and cost-effective way - using the technology in your pocket!

Engineers, Architect’s, Clients, Builder’s and Manager’s alike will find the interface simple to use and easy to understand allowing them to test structures that may be susceptible to excessive vibration.

Use your smartphone or tablet to carry out real time vibration testing of structures, subject to human footfall induced vibration, without the need to engage expensive specialists and undertake time consuming testing and reporting. The app will allow users to gain instantaneous feedback as to the performance of the structure with regards to standard industry design criteria.

The app utilises the accelerometers in your device to record raw acceleration data - which is then post-processed within the app itself, to generate a maximum acceleration response factor, and a brief commentary on the structure’s performance with respect to industry standard performance criteria.

The post-processing uses a band-pass filter to apply frequency weighting of the raw data to ISO 2631 for human comfort, to account for human's varied perception of vibration at different frequencies. An RMS average is then calculated for the filtered data - the maximum RMS value is then reported as a ‘Response Factor’. In addition, a brief commentary is provided as to how the response compares to industry standard design criteria.

The app is not intended to replace specialist testing and equipment, but allows users to test their structures prior to engaging specialists, the results of which may then be used to inform decision making - hopefully saving clients and project professionals time and money!

Updated September 2016: The app now measures in all 3 directions, allowing assessment of lateral vibrations in structures like footbridges. Let us know what you think!
