Sejarah Haji dalam Islam bermula dari ribuan tahun yang lalu. Pada masa Nabi Ibrahim AS (1861 - 1686 SM), yang merupakan keturunan Sam Bin Nuh AS (3900 - 2900 SM).

Literatur-literatur yang ada dalam khasanah Islam menjelaskan bahwa Nabi Ibrahim AS lahir di Ur-Kasdim, sebuah kota penting di Mesopotamia, selanjutnya Nabi Ibrahim tinggal di sebuah lembah di negeri Syam.

Tokoh ‘Ammar bin Luhay merupakan orang yang pertama kali menyebarkan ajaran menyembah berhala di seluruh Jazirah Arab. Dialah yang bertanggung jawab merubah ajaran tauhid menjadi menyembah berhala.

Sejak itu, orang-orang Arab meletakkan patung dan berhala yang mereka anggap sebagai tuhan di sekitar Ka’bah. Bahkan sebagian kabilah Mekkah mempunyai mata pencaharian sebagai pembuat patung dan berhala.

Mereka tetap memperbolehkan kabilah atau kelompok lain untuk menunaikan haji ke Baitullah, tanpa membedakan agama dan kepercayaan. Para pemeluk agama tauhid termasuk agama Masehi, masih terus menjalankan ritual haji ke Ka’bah.

Saat itu, kondisi Ka’bah sangat memprihatinkan. Dindingnya dipenuhi puisi dan lukisan. Bahkan lebih dari 360 berhala terdapat di sekitar Ka’bah.

Setelah melalui periode yang panjang, terjawablah doa Nabi Ibrahim as yang tercantum dalam Al-Qur’an: “Ya Tuhan kami, utuslah untuk mereka seorang Rosul dari kalangan mereka, yang akan membacakan kepada mereka ayat-ayat-Mu dan mengajarkan kepada mereka Al Kitab (Al Qur’an) dan Al Hikmah (As Sunnah) serta mensucikan mereka. Sesungguhnya Engkaulah Yang Maha Perkasa lagi Maha Bijaksana.” (QS Albaqarah : 129)

Nabi Muhammad tidak hanya membersihkan Ka’bah dari segala kotoran, tetapi juga mengembalikan kemurnian ibadah haji sesuai tuntunan Allah sejak jaman Nabi Ibrahim AS.

Allah SWT mengutus Nabi Muhammad SAW sebagai jawaban atas doa Nabi Ibrahim AS tersebut. Selama 23 tahun Nabi Muhammad SAW menyebarkan pesan Tauhid, pesan yang sama seperti yang dibawa Nabi Ibrahim AS dan semua Nabi pendahulunya, untuk menegakkan hukum Allah dimuka bumi.
