Fundada pela Universidade da Cidade em 18 novembro de 1982 no município de Itaguaí, foi inicialmente coordenada pelo sr. Ivan Borges, e tinha como objetivo inicial além de comunicar, servir como uma rádio escola para alunos de jornalismo da referida instituição, é claro que mesmo tendo uma definição bem clara, a Rádio Grande Rio 1560 AM, acabou se tornando uma fonte de grandes talentos, sem falar que foi uma das primeiras emissoras de rádio a transmitir partidas de futebol ao vivo, fato que até os dias de hoje faz da Grande Rio uma das pioneiras no assunto.
