About this product

Hesiod's "Works and Days", a work of ancient Greek literature.

Hesiod's "Works and Days" description

Hesiod's "Works and Days" (Wisdom of the Ancients #3)

This app contains the full text of Hugh G. Evelyn-White's public domain translation of 1914, as transcribed by ISTA, the Internet Sacred Text Archives. "Works and Days", written by the poet Hesiod around 700 BCE, is the earliest known example of Greek didactic poetry (utilitarian as well as artistic), providing instruction on the agricultural arts, guidance on living a moral life, and advice on which days of the month to perform various activities. It thus offers a detailed view into the daily life of the ancient Greeks. It is also the source of several well known stories (Prometheus, Pandora, and the Five Ages of Man). As such, it is a key document in the history of Greek influenced civilizations. As per the original translator, Evelyn-White, the text is sequentially numbered, and broken into sections according to content.

The app offers the user the ability to randomly select an individual group of sayings for contemplation, as well as the ability to choose an individual group of sayings by line numbers (with the leading portion of text to hint at the included content), to search the text of the document for groups of sayings containing a particular word, and of course scroll through the full text of the document.
