First determine the surrounding: Depending on whether you are going to draw a tiger in jungle or a dog in your apartment you should be drawing the surrounding environment. For example when you are drawing a tiger in jungle some trees, a water body will make your drawing look more natural.

When drawing a domesticated dog addition of some furniture etc in your composition will make your drawing more believable. One thing keep in mind you do not need to make elaborate drawing of the surrounding environment your main stress will be on the animal not on surrounding environment.

Start with most basic postures: animals can be in various postures and some postures may be more difficult to draw than others. When getting started attempt to draw the simplest postures, when you mature you can draw more complicated postures with ease. Do not forget the basics of drawing: the basic techniques apply equally well no matter if you are going to draw human being or animals.

Keep in mind almost every thing we see around us are 3d objects and drawing them is basically converting the 3d objects to their 2d representation.
