In the history of Eid Milad-un-Nabi it was celebrated to hold the Muslims together and to develop a brotherhood between Muslims. After that This is celebrated every year on the same date.
There is also some doubt about the date of birth of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Sunni scholars say that it is 12th of Rabi-ul-Awal and Shia scholars say that it is 17th of Rabi-ul-Awal.
In Pakistan, on the 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awal, the day start with 31 guns salute in the federal government and 21 guns salute in provincial governments. There is also National holiday on that day and people celebrates the day with attending the mehfils in which the teachings of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) are taught my Muslim scholars.
Well some people celebrate this and some people say this is a Bidh’a or in other words this is just an innovation, so by this word there is also doubt that is it true or is it wrong to celebrate Eid Milad-un-Nabi. Some scholars say that there are only two big events to celebrate for Muslims one is Eid-ul-Fitar and the second is Eid-ul-Azha. Abdul-Aziz ibna AbduAllah ibn Baaz, Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, Zakir Naik and Ebrahim Desai forbid celebrating the Eid Milad-un-Nabi. Well according to Tahir-ul-Qadari and Zahid Shakir have given their approval to the observance of Eid Milad-un-Nabi.
Eid Milad-un-Nabi is also celebrated in schools, colleges and universities by arranging the seminars and conferences, in which lectures are given by scholars and teachers about the teachings of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
