[소개]
강원 평화지역 지질공원은 한반도의 대륙충돌대로 추정되는 임진강대의 밀접한 영향권으로 이러한 사실을 뒷받침하는 다양한 지질유산을 보유한 지역이다. 또한 대륙충돌 이후 한반도에서 일어난 주요 지질․지형 발달과 기후 변화 과정 및 남․북한의 지질․지형의 연계구조를 확인하는 연결고리로써도 상당한 위치를 차지하고 있다.
따라서 강원 평화지역 지질공원은 한반도 지질․지형의 형성원인과 발달과정을 반영하여 매우 다양하고 복합적인 지질․지형 유산이 발달한 지역으로 크게 선캄브리아 시대의 변성암류, 쥐라기의 화강암류 및 신생대의 현무암류로 구성되어 있다.
